Monday, May 1, 2017 at 3:00PM A new month, a smattering of titles freshly available to stream for free at home, provided you have certain subscriptions. Let's play screengrab roulette. The following images are what came up (no cheating!) when I blind "scrolled" these newly streaming films on Amazon Prime. I only allow myself a second spin if the image is a complete blur or contains something really upsetting/violent [Complete list of titles is after the jump]

Cecil B DeMented (2000)
This is the John Waters movie with the biggest divide for me between how much I love the concept (a guerilla filmmaking unit kidnapping an A list actress and forcing her to star in their film) and what I think of the actual movie. But, damn, Alicia Witt was on comic fire in this movie as "Cherish". It's clear that Melanie Griffith who headlines had seen Serial Mom (1994) and thought 'I could do that!' Only, she couldn't. I forgot how many stars were in this before they broke out: Adrian Grenier, Maggie Gyllenhaal, and Michael Shannon!
I want you to listen to me, child. You need to turn around and get yourself on home.

Dale Dickey was so damn great in this movie, wasn't she?
Tuesday, April 4, 2017 at 1:00PM As we do, we've frozen random new to Amazon Prime titles and grabbed the first screengrab that popped up. Though they're leaning heavily on 1990s titles at the moment, their quality of offerings is far outpacing whatever B pictures Netflix has been licensing of late. Comment Party: Which will you be watching and which of the "new" streaming titles would you most want to read a write-up on this month? I'll obey your consensus command.

Yes, yes, great Vilmos Zsigmond cinematography, a sound Oscar, and killer lions and but on a scale of 1-100 how kissable were Val Kilmer's lips in his prime? My vote: 118.

Remember when wealthy perv Billy Baldwin was spying on all his tenants including sexy Sharon Stone who caught on to him? The 90s were THE decade for erotic thrillers, which have gone completely out of fashion, just like romantic comedies.

Chris here. Now that the dust has settled from the Oscar telecast snafu, we can just linger in the joy of a black queer microbudgeted film like Moonlight having won Best Picture. And after the film's emotionally immersive success I think it's safe to say that of all of last year's lauded filmmakers, the one that we're most clammoring to see the next project is Barry Jenkins.
Well get ready for him to transfer Moonlight's episodic structure into some actual episodes: the Oscar-winner will be writing and directing an adaptation of Colson Whitehead's "The Underground Railroad" for Amazon as a limited series. The novel follows Cora and Caesar, two slaves who find a literal subterranean train system on her journey to freedom in 1800s America. Already a National Book Award winner, the gorgeous prose is a perfect fit for Jenkins's attentive and comprehensive touch (I started the book this past weekend myself).
Considering Oprah selected it for her intermitent book club, one wonders if she'll also be lending her cache to at least the production team (the Moonlight producing team is also on board). For casting, while you can imagine actors lining up to work with Jenkins, but if there is one thing to hope carries over from Moonlight it's the sense of discovery he brings to a breakthrough ensemble. Have you read the novel yet?
Saturday, March 4, 2017 at 11:39AM March isn't a big month for either Netflix (previously discussed) or Amazon Prime. But there are still new titles to view if streaming if your main movie outlet. Here's what's new for late February and early March on Prime. We've freeze framed titles at totally random places and sharing whatever came up.
I hit the main artery so it's a real mess in there. On the upside I think she had a really good time.
What We Do in the Shadows
Bless Taika Waititi. This movie is so funny. And I saw it on a plane and still laughed so that's quite a recommendation because who can enjoy a movie fully on a plane? The Thor movies are definitely the superhero franchise I'm least interested in but with him behind Thor: Ragnarok I'm curious.
