Watching "The Man in The High Castle" As Democracy Crumbles

by Deborah Lipp

It’s possible that The Man in the High Castle was born to drive us all insane. It’s possible that Philip K. Dick dropped a lot of acid, looked into the future, saw our current political situation, and sent The Man in the High Castle to try to save us. It’s also possible I have been watching too much cable news.

The Man in the High Castle is the second-best show on Amazon Prime. Based on the 1962 novel by renowned mind-bender (and acid-dropper) Philip K. Dick (who brought us Blade Runner and Total Recall), the show depicts an alternate history, in which Germany and Japan won World War II, and divided the US between themselves. Our characters take us inside both the Japanese and German regimes, as well as inside the resistance movement operating against each.

I am watching a TV show about resistance movements. My Facebook feed says “resist”. The “RESIST” sign in Washington Square Park, protesting on behalf of Muslim immigrants, glowed in the dark. Resist...

New to Prime: Dirty Grandpa, Sabrina, and Nuts!

If you've caught up on all the Oscar nominees and want to watch movies at home instead, the first of the month always brings lots of options. As is our on again off again tradition, we've freeze framed new-to-streaming options on Amazon Prime at entirely random places and shared whatever we saw there. Will you be watching / have you loved any of these films?

Frankie & Johnny (1991)
MICHELLE! We have you're enjoying our Michellebration of the RePfeiffal on Saturdays. You're probably anxious to get to the movie-movies and they're right around the corner. Grease 2 and Scarface will sandwich Oscar week so that's something to look forward to! I haven't seen Frankie & Johnny in FOREVER but that's a few months away in the retrospective.

Six more screengrabs of randomness starring Zac Efron, Audrey Hepburn, Susan Sarandon and more after the jump...

Last Chance Streaming: Married to the Mob, Alice, Carmen Jones

There are 120+ titles leaving either Netflix or Amazon Prime this week as December arrives so if you've been meaning to see any of these, now's your chance. As is our practice we'll freeze frame a few selected titles at random and display what we found. Which will you be watching?

Have You Caught Up to Amazon's "Fleabag"

Chris here. Of all of the season's new series, one that you certainly haven't been hearing enough about is Amazon's Fleabag. Debuting quietly around the time of the third season of Amazon's flagship Transparent, Fleabag deserves so much more than getting lost in the shuffle. Written by and starring Phoebe Waller-Bridge, the show is a scabrously funny and sad take on a London woman's coping through grief, sex, and being "a bad feminist". If all that sounds too familiar, you may not be prepared for the freshness and frankness of Waller-Bridge's voice.
