Interview: Lin-Manuel Miranda on "Encanto" and "tick, tick...BOOM!"

by Nathaniel R

at the world premiere of "tick, tick, BOOM!"

I had the pleasure of interviewing Lin-Manuel Miranda in November while he was doing press for Encanto, now streaming on Disney+ with its soundtrack doing great business, too. He was energetic and smiling and gave great quote. Just a few days later, in a significantly less arranged moment, we came face-to-face the night of tick, tick... BOOM!'s premiere in Los Angeles. The response to the movie that night couldn't have been dreamier. He looked elated if significantly more tired than he had over Zoom. He admitted at the party that the entire week was a total blur. Just the week? The entire past year has been one Lin-Manuel Miranda highlight after another. So much so that we named him one of our top three entertainers of the year. In addition to questions about Encanto, tick, tick...BOOM!, and Hamilton, I made sure to ask him how he finds time for sleep.

Category Analysis: Who Will Take Home Outstanding Actor in a Limited Series?

The Film Experience Team is looking at the episode submissions for the major Emmy categories.

Who will win their first acting Emmy this year?By: Christopher James

Yes, we at The Film Experience are often more focused on actresses than actors. However, how can you blame us when you look at the race for Outstanding Lead Actor In A Limited Or Anthology Series Or Movie? While the Lead Actress category is filled with juggernauts, the Lead Actor category features two Hamilton performances, two stars of poorly reviewed series and a coattails nomination from a major show. None of the actors have won an Emmy before, though a few have decades long careers on film, TV and stage. It remains to be seen what voters will reward. Will they go more for an established actor they haven’t rewarded yet, or will they go for the biggest show? Maybe Hamilton will dominate the acting categories like it did at the Tonys.

Without further ado, let’s take a look at the nominees for Outstanding Lead Actor In A Limited Or Anthology Series Or Movie...

Doc Corner: 'On Broadway'

By Glenn Dunks

They say the neon lights are bright,
on Broadway.
They say there’s always magic in the air…

Let's be thankful that On Broadway doesn’t open with those famous lyrics from the song of the same name. Bob Fosse already did that, using George Benson’s funk-inspired 1978 rendition to launch All That Jazz over images of a throng of auditioning theatre wannabes. It’s showtime, folks, and that song is a hell of an introduction, but it's been done.

The release of Oren Jacoby’s doc feels perfectly timed, having been completed and screened at the Hamptons International Film Festival back in 2019 but delayed for general release until now as the city is on the verge of re-opening to crowds...

Category Analysis: Was It Kathryn Hahn All Along in Limited Supporting Actress?

Team Experience takes a look at the episode submissions for Emmy categories.

Who will win Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie?

By: Christopher James

It was Agatha All Along! Or was it?

There are several high profile performances nominated this year in the Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Limited Or Anthology Series Or Movie category. Pairs of Hamilton and Mare of Easttown women fill up a majority of the lineup. Additionally, character actress extraordinaire Kathryn Hahn finally got a major chance to shine in Disney+’s hit WandaVision. Rounding it out is a surprise nominee - Moses Ingram - from last fall’s water cooler hit The Queen’s Gambit. It’ll be a real race for the win. Let’s take a look at the nominees...

Emmy Category Analysis: Will "Hamilton" Win With Three Nominees?

Team Experience is looking at episode submissions for all the major Emmy categories...

Three "Hamilton" men are nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie - Anthony Ramos, Daveed Diggs and Jonathan Groff.

By Christopher James

Can Daveed Diggs come one step closer to an EGOT? The actor already has a Tony and Grammy for his work and he could very well add an Emmy to that haul… all for the same performance in Hamilton. He’s not the only Hamilton star vying for the Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor In A Limited Or Anthology Series Or Movie. Even in such a long and lofty category title, considering the filmed performance of Hamilton in this category feels like a bit of a stretch. While this could ding the Emmy chances for Hamilton, voters didn't seem to be bothered by it, as the Limited Series acting categories all suggest.

Diggs’ Emmy is far from assured though. Three of the buzziest miniseries each have a young, breakout actor nominated here. I May Destroy You, The Queen’s Gambit and Mare of Easttown are all huge Emmy players this season, showing up in multiple categories. Coattails for any of these shows could help one of these men beat the trio of Hamilton nominees. Let’s take a look at the nominees for Outstanding Supporting Actor In A Limited Or Anthology Series Or Movie (*NOTE SPOILERS AHEAD):
