Juliette Binoche and Hayao Miyazaki to be honored at Meihodo International

If you're like us, every once in a while you find yourself asking "What's going on with Juliette Binoche?" The all time great has been a bit quiet this past year (apart from that unfortunately hushed release of The Truth) but this week she'll be honored at the Meihodo International Youth Visual Media Festival. If your reaction is "third annual what?" don't feel ashamed. There are so many festivals -- even in this virtual year - that it's hard for even the most devout cinephiles to keep track. But this one will be easy to get familiar with. The nominees are all on YouTube and the Meihodo ceremony will stream live on YouTube this Thursday (January 7th) at 3 PM EST. Me and Maggie

In my family, the history of our pets tends to be linked to a sense of loss. Through my early childhood, we had two dogs, a beautiful Cocker Spaniel called Gigi and an English Setter by the name of Minnie. Gigi had been my mother's dog and she, unfortunately, died while I was still very young, but Minnie was born the same year as me and we grew up together. That is until she got sick when I was nine, cancer quickly making the lively companion become lethargic and in constant pain. She was put down before the suffering continued and I was heartbroken. Seeing that, my mom, who had a lifelong distrust for cats due to some unfortunate experiences as a child, put her bad feelings aside and decided to adopt an adorable little kitten I had grown fond of in the weeks before Minnie's passing…

With just 16 days to go until Coco wins Pixar its 9th Academy Award for Best Animated Feature let's look back over the first 16 years of the category. (Yes, that's right math geniuses, Pixar has won a full 50% of the animated Oscars thus far.)

1988-2000 The category didn't exist until 2001 but it wasn't just created on a whim. What cartoon sends you spiralling into depression? 

JOSE: Dumbo! As a giant eared child, it brings back so many traumas. 

ERIC:  Dumbo.  When caged Mama's trunk reaches for Dumbo's trunk: merciless!

NICK: The Legend of Bagger Vance.

KIM: Toy Story 3 was a pretty traumatic viewing experience for me; I came out of the theatre with my eyes almost swollen shut from crying. (The holding hands when they all thought they were going to die, you guys!) If I harken back to a movie that sent me off the edge as a kid, I'm going to go with The Secret of Nimh. I know it ENDS happily, but that movie is DARK. 

JORGE:  Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle throws me into a deep pit of out-of-body melancholy.

DAVID:  The Fox and the Hound is a regular feature in my nostalgic nightmares, even though I haven't watched it since I was about twelve and the VHS gave out. Under the weight of emotional distress, no doubt.

STEVEN:  Every time I think about the fact that there is a Cars 3 coming I get depressed. Does that count?
