Today on the menu in Venice, there is only one option: crying your heart out. You can choose which missing son and worried parent will tear your heart in pieces, though.

Who is 'the son' of the title? That's debatable. There is the troubled teenager Nicholas (Zen McGrath) that Peter (Hugh Jackman) had with his ex-wife Kate (Laura Dern). Peter also has a newborn son he is raising with his new partner Beth (Vanessa Kirby). Maybe Peter himself is the titular character? He's learning some hard lessons in being a father while struggling with what it means to be the son of Anthony (Sir Anthony Hopkins). I would say the latter, considering how this movie works best as a reminder of Hugh Jackman’s considerable acting skill...

Tony Afterglow Notes + What's Opening on Broadway in 2022

A few tidbits in the afterglow of the 75th Annual Tony Awards. Plus which shows might factor into next year's Tony race.

• Hugh Jackman tested positive for COVID after his Tony night performance. What timing. So his standby Max Clayton will be playing Harold Hill for the next week of Music Man shows. You saw Max Clayton a couple of times on Tony night since he got a big smooch and shout-out from his boyfriend Matt Doyle who who Best Featured Actor in a Musical for Company. Incidentally the role of "Jamie" in Company, which Doyle won for, is the same role that won Bridgerton star Jonathan Bailey an Olivier in London so this gender-bent version of Sondheim's classic has been a huge boost for super-handsome out gay theater actors!

• Ratings are in and the Tony Awards were up 40% from last year's strange nearly awards free edition of the show. The Tonys went back to basics...

Hmmmm. Could Hugh Jackman pick up another Tony and the Oscar in the next 10 months?

Which actor will pull an Andrew Garfield this year and get the internet excited about his work with renewed passion? Which actor will pull a Benedict Cumberbatch and become the year's critical darling only to lose the statue? Which actor will pull a Will Smith and be the slam dunk winner due to a well liked performance and his entire career beforehand? We can't possibly know yet but we can speculate about it. So let's do that.

Internet Passions? My crystal ball says either Austin Butler (Elvis), Colin Farrell (Banshees of Inisherin), or Brendan Fraser (The Whale)

Critical Darling? Hmmm. Adam Driver (White Noise), Viggo Mortensen (Crimes of the Future), or Colman Domingo (Rustin)

"It's Time" Career Win Possibilities? Hugh Jackman (The Son), Colin Farrell or Brendan Gleeson (Banshees of Inisherin), Adam Driver (White Noise)
