Belgian goddess Virginie Efira (at Venice for Other People's Children) and French icon Isabelle Huppert (presenting Le Syndicaliste) often exude sexual danger onscreen, but only Huppert opted for murder weapons as heels (look at those!). Efira went with a non-dangerous but gorgeous carmine velvet dress. Spain's movie queen Penelope Cruz hit Venice to promote her new Italian film L'Immensita and stunned as usual; truly one of the bonafide MOVIE STARS of our era. American actresses Hong Chau, Sadie Sink (both promoting The Whale), Patricia Clarkson (Monica), ad Britich actresses Jodie Turner-Smith (who is at every red carpet event in Venice this year), and Mia Goth (promoting Pearl) complete today's red carpet lineup.
Round 1 - Jodie Turner-Smith, Catherine Deneuve, Julianne Moore, etc...
Round 2 - Timothée Chalamet, Tessa Thompson, Cate Blanchett, etc...

The women in the four movies screened today are truly formidable. They're capable of eating their enemies alive -- one quite literally as in Guadagnino’s latest Bones and all. Two more are fighting conventional portraits of females as weak. The last is living an extraordinary life and using her power as an artist to expose rich capitalist shenanigans. What a quartet...

Who wouldn't want to travel with Lesley Manville to Paris this summer?By: Christopher James
Make Lesley Manville the star of every movie. I’m serious, Hollywood. Do it. As the titular character in Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris, the Oscar nominated character actress brings heart, humor and gumption to her Cinderella-esque heroine. Even from the trailer alone, you can understand the type of frothy entertainment that awaits. The movie attempts to go a bit deeper at times, but it more or less lives up to what the trailer advertised. This is a light, fun time at the ovies with beautiful gowns and great performances. What takes it from a watch-on-a-plane movie to a must-see matinee is a galvanizing and endearing performance by Manville.
We find our titular character, Ada Harris (Lesley Manville), in the midst of bad news...

Alicia Vikander arrived at Cannes to promote her new series Irma Vep (finally ending the drought of her once ubiquitous husband Michael Fassbender in the public eye - he wore a simple tux), Marion Cotillard was on hand for the premiere of her new film Brothers and Sisters (which was poorly reviewed, alas) and daringly wore what looked like shorts to her premiere. Isabelle Huppert was in town for that buzzy donkey flick EO (review) and though she wore a simple black gown for the premiere she then showed up in this eye catching sure-to-be-divisive full body look thereafter. Fashion icon Tilda Swinton never leaves Cannes after only one lewk so she was out again after her 3000 Years premiere wearing a much different more adrogynous look.
