Review: A New Take on "Fatal Attraction" (Paramount+)

By Christopher James

You can’t capture lightning in a bottle twice. Paramount+’s new trip through its catalog is the TV series adaptation of Fatal Attraction, the 1987 blockbuster. In trying to modernize this erotic thriller, this new show impressively falls short in all regards. All of its new additions involve introducing grating new characters or dulling the iconic affair duo with the clunkiest of backstories. Rather than be a new story entirely, Fatal Attraction tries to shoe-in callbacks to the original with all the tact and subtlety of a woman boiling a bunny… oops. Making matters worse, the talented cast is left completely adrift - caught in the uncanny valley of putting their own stamp on iconic characters but unable to shake off imitating Michael Douglas and Glenn Close. In both cases, they are very pale imitations.

In short, Fatal Attraction is an epic misfire across all fields...

Gay Best Friend: Damian in "Mean Girls" (2004)

a series by Christopher James looking at the 'Gay Best Friend' trope

"She doesn't even go here" - Daniel Franzese steals yet another scene as Damian in "Mean Girls."Everyone remembers their first.

I don’t think Damian from Mean Girls was the first gay character I saw on screen. So many comedies throughout the 90s and early 00s used gay characters as easy punchlines or setup for gay panic jokes. However, Damian was the first time I saw someone who said it was ok to be gay. It would be many years before I myself came out, but Damian always felt like a touchstone to come back to. Damian is arguably the most famous example of the “Gay Best Friend” trope in 21st century movies thus far. He epitomizes the stereotype in both positive and negative ways. What stands out and makes him timeless is the way he takes up space within the school, especially at a time where gay kids often tried to “make it through” or “fade into the background.” If he was going to be a stereotype, by God he was going to let you know that he was the stereotype and you'd better pay attention...

Masters of Sex Catch-up: Our Story So Far

Season 4 of Masters of Sex premieres on September 11 at 10pm Eastern on Showtime. I’ve been blogging this show for all of its run.

Masters of Sex is based on the true story of the breakthrough sex research of Doctor William Masters (Michael Sheen) and Virginia Johnson (Lizzy Caplan) (“Masters & Johnson”), while intermingling fact and fiction. Some characters are entirely fictional, parts of the chronology are tweaked, but major historical moments are generally respected.

Where we left off: Here’s the quick summation of the Season 3 finale—read below for a detailed series summary. Bill Masters, realizing his love for Virginia Johnson, confesses his affair to his wife, who already knew. Too late; he’s chased Virginia and her new fiancé to the airport, but they take off for Mexico and presumably elopement. Barton Scully is in love with a hot gay doctor. Helen and Betty are expecting thanks to Austin. Libby dumped the next door neighbor hottie, who moved out immediately.

Okay, what? If you want to know more, read on:
