I don't think Julianne Moore has enough awards

Another year, another Todd Haynes film in grave danger of being overlooked by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. I don’t love May December as deeply as some of y’all, but its complete omission from SAG was a gigantic bummer. With Oscar voting underway, I’ve decided to do what I do best: write about actresses for a moderate and appreciative corner of queers on the internet. I’m bringing back my Supporting Actress write-ups as an For Your Consideration pulpit, starting with my absolute favorite of the performances currently contending for a nomination: Julianne Moore’s black hole of pathetic neediness and weaponized ignorance in May December.

"Nyad" and "The Color Purple" get a boost from SAG

The Screen Actors Guild announced their annual nominations this morning and there are some minor plot twists. They rejected May December in totality (Todd Haynes movies do continue to struggle with non-critic based movie awards bodies), embraced Nyad just like the Globes did, and threw new question marks around both Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress. No major plot twists this year, though, like an I Smile Back, Woman in Gold, or St. Vincent. 

The SAG Awards will stream live on Netflix this year – a first! – as we’ve long suspected awards shows will move to streaming like everything else has. Comments and a full list of nominees after the jump…

More Category Confusion: LEAD or SUPPORTING?

Oscar Volley: Is There Room for Surprise in Best Original Screenplay?

ERIC:  Hi Nick, we have some great options in the Original Screenplay category this year.  It feels like there's two guarantees for a nomination:  Greta Gerwig's Barbie (unless it changes categories and is nominated for Adapted instead) and David Hemingson's The Holdovers.  I like both of those pictures enormously, and both films succeed largely on the words and structure of their screenplays.  The Holdovers is essentially out of a Screenwriting 101 class, in the best way possible, in that it has all the classic elements (inciting incident, minute 30 turn, minute 60 turn, etc.) that scripts are built upon, but Hemingson executes everything very artfully so it feels satisfying rather than him hitting points...

Friday Awards Wrap-Up: Critics, Documentaries and Top Ten Fever!

Lily Gladstone started strong, but Emma Stone takes the lead in Best Actress this week.
Another week, another slew of critics awards and top 10s from some of the world's most prestigious film publications. Though Killers of the Flower Moon continues to lead the Best Picture race, it's not a consensus pick. Indeed, a wide variety of titles have taken top honors, making for an exciting season. Well, at least it's like that in the most important category. Da'Vine Joy Randolph continues to sweep the Supporting Actress prizes, having won every single one in the season so far, while Emma Stone has taken the lead in Best Actress over Lily Gladstone. The men's categories are more chaotic, while Nolan is ahead among directors. All in all, it's been a busy week…
