Quick Takes on Threequels: Ant-Man & Magic Mike

by Nathaniel R

Paul Rudd vs Jonathan Majors in "Quantumania"

Forever behind, always catching up. Herewith two spontaneous reviews of threequels that came out during Oscar madness that we never got around to talking about (as they weren't related to that all-consuming golden season): Marvel's Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and Steven Soderbergh's trilogy-closing Magic Mike's Last Dance...

MCU Catch-Up: ‘Ant-Man’ and ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp’

By Abe Friedtanzer

I see a lot of movies. Still, I sometimes miss big releases if a) I don’t see the film either at a press screening or right when comes out and b) it’s not an awards contender. With the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there’s so much to keep up with. At a certain point, there are some entries that I just never get around to seeing. Among the few I was missing up until recently were Ant-Man and Ant-Man and the Wasp, the lead-ups to the forthcoming Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. Thanks to a long flight last week and two Disney+ downloads ahead of time, I’m now caught up with everyone’s favorite shrinking hero…

TV Review: The Shrink Next Door (Apple TV+)

By: Christopher James

Paul Rudd gets inside Will Ferrell's head and life in Apple TV+'s "The Shrink Next Door."

It’s impossible to resist Paul Rudd, People’s 2021 Sexiest Man Alive. Rudd’s charm has aged as gracefully as his skin, which makes him great casting for the titular role in Apple TV+’s The Shrink Next Door. Co-starring comedy giant Will Ferrell, at first glance it would appear Apple has the makings of an enjoyable watercooler miniseries. Unfortunately, the strong relationship between the actors never pays off with a satisfying or cohesive final product. Don’t come in expecting an Anchorman reunion. This shrink has much more sinister tricks in store.

There have been many stories of therapists overstepping their boundaries with patients. Based on a true story (and the Wondery & Bloomberg podcast of the same name), The Shrink Next Door explores a particularly toxic doctor-patient relationship....

Gay Best Friend: George Hanson (Paul Rudd) in The Object of My Affection (1998)

Series by Christopher James looking at the 'Gay Best Friend' trope

Doesn't it look like these two crazy, beautiful kids would make a cute couple? Think again.Another week, another 1998 comedy about the relationship between a woman and her gay best friend starring a cast member of Friends. You have to love a specific subgenre. While Lisa Kudrow and Martin Donovan traveled across the country to find Christina Ricci in The Opposite of Sex, Jennifer Aniston stayed in New York in a more familiar genre -- the romantic comedy.

As the title The Object of My Affection suggests, Aniston falls in love. Unfortunately for her, the titular role is her new gay best friend, a first grade teacher played by a baby-faced, charming Paul Rudd. Wendy Wasserstein’s adaptation of the Stephen McCauley book of the same name uses genre tropes to sand some of the thorny elements of the premise. Yet, this not-always-perfect movie gives a really interesting look at a codependent friends who love each other, but also hold each other back...
