A Map of the (Oscar) World

If all that chatter about the now infamous address where The King's Speech was partially filmed gets you thinking about location, location, location, here's something to make you even more obsessive. Here's  a map of the 83rd Oscar World.

What's happening closest to your location? Is the Black Swan dancing near you? Maybe you're skinning squirrel's in those Winter's Bone Ozarks with Ree Dolly? Or horseback riding into dangerous True Grit territory? Or maybe you're attending college near The Social Network. (A lot of people do!). Maybe one of the foreign language films is happening right next to  you. Do you know where Amy Adams was born? I didn't until looking it up to drop the pin.

If you like it make sure to pass it on to friends. Or perhaps cartographers.

Waste Land (nominated for Best Documentary) is mostly set in Brazil, near Rio de Janeiro.

I didn't know John Hawkes was from Minnesota! Awesome. He'll always win Best Supporting Actor... in my heart.

It's funny, though: from a distance, it looks like the Coens' pistol is in Wisconsin rather than the Twin Cities. And that it's being aimed at Hakwes's squirrel. Is this Ree & family looking for some breakfast?

Awesome! Infotainment at its best.

127 Hours for me, baby! I'm only a few hours away from that damn canyon. Severed arms and soft drink commercials! Yay!

We suburbanites have David O. Russell from Mammaroneck and Jessie Eisenberg from East Brunswick.

Looks like I'm closest to Black Swan.

Andrew -- aren't we all.

(oh, you meant proximity?)

Thats AMAZING.
It looks like Tom Hooper was born in the same hospital as me from that map. I'm up for a good night Sunday then...

Well...the Québec scenes of "Incendies" took place in Montréal...and not in Québec City, as the symbol on the map would lead you to believe.

Also, "Barney's Version" (up for the Makeup Oscar) largely took place in Montréal. In that film, you see the building where I work...and that building has a real, live Oscar in a display case about two minutes' walk from my office. (Best Animated Short of 1982, to be precise.)

If you include all of Québec...Dean DeBlois, one of the co-producers of "How to Train Your Dragon," is from one of the suburbs of Ottawa on the Québec side of the river. (And...he's a really sexy Bear to boot!)

So, yeah...I'm feeling a bit of proximity.

Bill -- i was locating the films where they either took place or -- if i couldn't figure it out -- where the director was born.

have you ever seen Denis Villeneuev'es short "next floor"? It's so good.

Is it un-hip for me to notice that the Ozarks should be in southwestern Missouri instead of Louisville KY? How much hipness can I regain by noting that Jennifer Lawrence is in fact from Louisville? Will I lose much of my regained hipness by admitting that I was born in Kentucky? How about if my boyhood home in Kentucky is 5 houses down the street from Johnny Depp's boyhood home in the same Kentucky town?

oh oops, sorry. re: Ree & Ozarks, I see the bigger map now. We don't have much use for the bigger maps where I come from. :-/

While my life in the Bronx is currently making David O'Russell closest to me, my heart says it's still John Hawkes-my hometown will explode if he manages to win this thing.
