I used to call this day my Christmas but I worry about coal in the stocking. Did we receive Oscar nomination gifts this year or lumps of coal? A little of both of course. Tracee Ellis Ross and Kumail Nanjiani were the chipper announcers this morning, making frequent jokes about how little sleep they'd gotten before the announcements.

Predictions: 4/5 missed Dafoe thinking it would be Ethan Hawke, by far the morning's worst snub. He practically swept 30+ critics awards and still nothing. It's the biggest critical to Oscar snub since Sally Hawkins in Happy Go Lucky or Peter Sargaard in Shattered Glass.

Predictions: 3/5 missed First Man (I thought they'd say no to practical effects as they sometimes do) and Christopher Robin. I'm happy that Black Panther scored multiple nominations but I'm pleased it missed here. It's a rare instance of a super popular film missing an obvious category that it could compete in because it's not actually one of the best options.

Predictions: 3/5 What an ungodly mess this category is! But I'm really happy for BlacKkKlansman which should obviously run away with the win but won't.

Predictions: 3/5 Now here I DID get Black Panther AND A Quiet Place right but I missed Bohemian and Roma thinking this slightly more effects oriented category would have room for Mission: Impossible - Fallout. Note to self: NEVER bank on a nomination for the Mission: Impossible series, no matter how big and popular that series gets. They've yet to receive even a single nomination.

Predictions 4/5 I missed only Mother, the film I could find the least info on (there is like *nothing* at IMDB about this beyond a couple of actors credits and the director and there are 14 more films named Mother that came out in the past two years.

Predictions: 3/5 and I'm pretty shocked about it. I think BlacKkKlansman is a really good score but I expected to see Globe and Critics Choice winner First Man here in its place. And I thought A Quiet Place would score here over the waning Mary Poppins Returns but A Quiet Place really underperformed this morning.

That best director list was almost perfect until Adam McKay’s name was called. Thrilled The Favourite did so well.

Those Best Director nominees were hysterical. Four great choices -- Lee, Pawlikowski, Lanthimos, Cuarón-- so you get your hopes up and start thinking how great the branch has become and then... McKay. Lolz.
Roma Will Win.
I had a really good hunch that Timothee Chalamet and Clare Foy were not getting in.
1. I'm shocked that Won't You Be My Neighbor did not get in for Documentary. 2. The Supporting Actress nod for Marina de Tavira was a pleasant surprise. 3. I felt a nameless shudder of apprehension at the Editing noms for both Green Book & Bohemian Rhapsody...don't do what you're thinking of doing, Academy. Do not do it!

Is Won't You Be My Neighbor the biggest snub in Best Documentary since the mid-'90s when films like Hoop Dreams and Crumb were left out?
Not that it was the favorite to begin with, but any chance A Star Is Born still had of winning Best Picture is pretty much gone now. No Director AND no Editing? It's not winning. I do wonder if Bradley being snubbed in Best Director might help his chances of winning Best Actor, though. Unfortunately I think Rami Malek is probably the frontrunner at the moment, but I could (hopefully) see it swinging it Bradley's favor.
Roma getting in for Actress and Supporting Actress definitely means it's even more loved than most people were expecting. It's a serious contender to win Best Picture for sure. In fact, it's probably the frontrunner now. I know Green Book has the PGA win, but Farrelly missing Best Director along with the fact that it has the fewest nominations of any of the Best Picture nominees (tied with Bohemian Rhapsody, anyway) makes me think (probably wishing thinking, admittedly) that it probably won't win. The Favourite tying Roma for most nominations is encouraging, but I still don't think it's a contender for the win. Best Picture is probably Roma out in front, with the possibility of Green Book pulling a Crash.
THEY MOSTLY DIDN’T FUCK IT UP THIS YEAR! All I needed and didn’t get were one nomination apiece for Eighth Grade and Burning, and I woulda been sold. Delighted for Spike Lee, Terence Blanchard, Nicholas Britell, Barry Alexander Brown, Regina King, Pawel Pawlikowski, Yorgos Lanthimos, Sam Elliott, Richard E. Grant, Nicole Holofcener (who has deserved a nomination since the ‘90s), Barry Jenkins, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, and Shoplifters, plus little Marina de Tavira whose surprise nomination wowed everyone. Yalitza Aparicio as the fifth Best Actress nominee is a little less exciting than if the fifth slot had gone to Elsie Fisher or Toni Collette, but I can fuck with it. And if they had to leave out worthy performances by Ethan Hawke and John David Washington, at least they gave it to my beloved uncle Willem Dafoe! Somewhat disappointed that Green Book, Bohemian Rhapsody, and Vice did so well (Ryan Coogler or Paul Schrader should’ve been the fifth Best Director nominee in Adam McKay’s place), but we knew they would, so oh well. I’m mostly thrilled, y’all! This could’ve been so much worse!

Ethan Hawke's miss suggests that it's not good to be a critics' darling if you have "Hawk" in your surname. Ask Sally Hawkins.

And while I love Bradley Cooper (he should win Best Actor!) and I was okay with Green Book (I know I know), I am glad to see them not nominated for director. The direction was the weakest part of both movies.
Willem Dafoe has been so much better in so many other movies than At Eternity's Gate. I am surprised by this nom. It's not a very good movie, and he is not that great in it.
Oh shit, I just realized they snubbed both The Death of Stalin and Leave No Trace. Two more things I regret.
Ethan Hawke is a truly great actor, but his snub would hurt more if he hadn’t already been nominated twice, and if he hadn’t himself stolen the nomination that should’ve been Steve Buscemi’s for Ghost World in 2001.
The only pleasant surprises for me are Roma's two acting nominations and Paul Schrader in original screenplay. Disappointed in the lack of love for If Beale Street Could Talk, First Man, Widows, and Ethan Hawke.
Tom G. - I think the last time it happened was with Igmar Bergman and Lina Wertmüller for the 1976 Oscars.
@Mighty Rhino - a screenplay nomination for both of those movies would have been a nice surprise as well.
