It was a quiet weekend at the box office with both new wide releases (horror film Gretel and Hansel and revenge thriller The Rhythm Section) opening softly, apart from a few noteworthy monetary marks for indie films...

This weekend Parasite surpassed Amelie to become the 4th highest grossing foreign language film in the US this century. Well, sixth if you want to count Mel Gibson's two subtitled pictures (American made, but in dead languages). It trails only Pan's Labyrinth (2006), Hero (2002), and Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon (2000) now. Given that Oscar season ends in a week and it's already on Blu-Ray it can't beat Hero or Crouching Tiger but it could theoretically reach Pan's Labyrinth's US total. We continue to be amazed.

The other record broken this week is that Japan's Academy-ignored hopeful for both International Feature and Animated Feature, Weathering With You, has become GKids all-time biggest hit in US release. It's accumulated $7 million in the US. (That's a tiny portion of its gross globally as it's at $186 million worldwide).

Finally, we're happy to see the Oscar Nominated Shorts rolling out (this program is just the live-action and animated shorts grouped together) but this will be yet another casualty of a shortened awards season. Last year that program grossed $3 million indicating continued strong interest for specialty audiences but there's no way this year's will hit that mark since the Oscars are in just one week's time.

I saw Parasite for a second time. Truly wishing it pulls an upset and wins Best Picture. It would be totally inspired.

Re-watches of Spider-Man: Far from Home and Addams Family Values and a few hours ago, What Did Jack Do? by David Lynch.

Just The Good Place finale three times.

HARRIET - As derivative and bland as reported.

MISS AMERICANA - I really like Taylor Swift and find her fascinating. I'm excited for when enough time has passed that we can have a documentary with distance and perspective on her. For now, we have this brand building corporate product - enjoyable, well made, but ultimately an ad. It's fine.

PORTRAIT OF A LADY ON FIRE - FINALLY. It mostly lives up to the hype. So gorgeous and overwhelming. I'm not sure how I feel about the maid's storyline, but everything else worked for me. I was very shaken up afterwards.

Nathaniel, when are you going to mention the Writers Guild Awards (Parasite, and JoJo Rabbit winners) and BAFTA winners (1917 and Parasite, among other favorites)?

I keep thinking Parasite could pull the upset. Maybe? Or is it wishful thinking?

I saw “Bombshell”, “Parasite”, and “The Rhythm Section”.

I liked “Bombshell” a lot more than I thought I would, I liked “Parasite” less than I thought I would, and “The Rhythm Section” was okay.

“Bombshell” has the most amazing cast, even in the small parts. Since I’ve never watched the Fox Channel (why would I?) I’m not familiar with these people and so can’t judge how close the actors were to the real life person they were portraying.

I’d read and heard so much about “Parasite” before seeing it, that I went in expecting one thing, and saw something different. I’ll have to let some time pass so I can see it again with fresh eyes.

“The Rhythm Section” takes the movie trope of “nothing left to lose” that is often portrayed as devil may care flamboyance, and instead translates it as utter exhaustion, melancholia, and inner emptiness that can’t be healed. I liked its anti- glamour stance.

But Jude Law can never play another role of combat teacher after playing one in “Captain Marvel”. I kept wondering if the heroine would have as good a line to deliver to him as Captain Marvel’s “I don’t have to prove anything to you”.

I saw the animated shorts. I think Hair Love and Kitbull are the best. Two of the other three nominees, Daughter and Memorable, seem technically pretty good, but too morose. The third, Sister, seems to end too abruptly (like they ran out of money?). Two of the non-nominees, Hors Piste and Maestro, were better overall. The emphasis this year seems to be on technical strength and not on the ability to tell a good story. Daughter is essentially incomprehensible.

Parasite holds up on second viewing.

Remember the days when studios would wait until summer to release movies on DVD? I remember waiting forever for Chicago to come out, -- I think it was finally released on DVD in late-August 2003.

Mayan is not a dead language. Communities in the Yucatan peninsula and central America still use it.

@Andy - Those were dark times.

Finally saw Bombshell and The Farewell.
I enjoyed the former, which was strangely entertaining considering its subject matter. The screenplay was witty and the cast did a great job (I thought the supporting actors were even better than the three leads who gave solid but underwhelming performances - though I was fascinated by Theron's make-up every time she's on-screen, which is a lot).
I didn't expect The Farewell to be so funny and I loved it. What a beautiful story! Shuzhen Zhao was the best in show and I'm really happy Awkwafina won the Globe. I thought her performance is very subtle and understated and it's not the comedic turn I was expecting from her.

@ Arkaan- me too. I sobbed a lot.

Bombshell- I loved it and thought it was so deserving of just more than 3 Oscar nominations.THeron and Robbie were excellent but I actually like Robbie a little more maybe due to her character arc in the film. I thought it could have and should have pulled a Vice and shown up in Best Picture.

Joker- Admittedly i liked it ( Phoenix was excellent but still not my favorite performance of the nominees this year) but I really hope this film does not win Best Picture as it is way too bleak and too nihilistic ( and this is coming from someone who likes and admires bleak nihilistic films at times)

I gave a re watch to The Prime Of Miss Jean Brodie and Drive which still holds up remarkably well in my opinion. Maggie was great but I still think fonda should have won that year for They Shoot Horses Dont They. Drive is still one of the most unique films of the past decade and how Albert Brooks missed out on that Oscar nod baffles me. Was the movie just too gory or was it just voters not liking or appreciating Brooks as a villain?

I admit I skipped the animated shorts this year just because I live in an area where all we get are the latest blockbusters and I was able to watch the shorts online. I just couldn't bring myself to drive two hours to a theater.

I saw "1917" and loved it- yes I've become obsessed with War World I. A great film which works both as an epic and more human story. I was not convinced that it was all done on single take- and the movie is too good for that sort of gimmick. It deserves all its nominations but why no acting honors- the two lead are excellent and Gerge MacKay who carries the entire movie deserves to be big star

I've watched Bombshell, expecting it to be meh, but finds it surprisingly entertaining n engaging!! The mixed reviews n poor box office had certainly hurts its best pic chances.

All the three leads r good but Charlize's makeup is too distracting!! I thot Kidman is best in show, follows by Robbie n Theron.

I'm surprise Nicole nev get any traction except for SAG.

I also watched Little Women n I luv it!!! ♥ dun ustand y pple said its hard to follow.. I din read the book n only seen K. Hepburn yearsss ago, but thr's no problem following the story! Their younger days is bathed in a goldem glow, while their latter years is clouded in cool blue tone!

I disagreed tt Amy steals the show. Pugh may deliver an Amy we nev seen before, but the heart o LW is still Jo March!! n Saoirse is so marvelous n believable as the tomboy growing up to be a fiercely independent writer!! The whole ensemble is at the peak o their game!! 👍 Greta totally deserves an Oscar for her adaption!!
