Emmy Review: Supporting Actress in a Comedy

I chose to cover this category because I hadn't seen ANY of the submitted episodes. I'm never up to date on TV so figured it would be a fun way to sample while also facing the fact that I'll never catch up given that there's always more new stuff to watch so I'm just jumping ahead to 2020 and moving on. I will say that ranking these choices through episode submissions alone was a much different experience than I was expecting in terms of personal favourites versus rank. The Link Purple

• /Film The Color Purple musical is getting a film version. It will be directed by Black is King helmer Blitz Bazawule. No word on casting yet but I think we can all agree that Cynthia Erivo should reprise her Tony-winning role!
• Broadway World meanwhile Erivo has launched her own production company

Who will win the Emmy for Supporting Actress in a Comedy?

It really is a blessing and a curse when the Television Academy gives us eight nominees for Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series - a trend they can’t seem to depart from. It’s a blessing because we see a rich field of actresses getting their dues. Yet it’s a curse because, more than any other category this past decade, the previous year's winner seems to repeat at least once. Between McKinnon, Allison Janney for Mom, and my arch nemesis Julie Bowen for Modern Family, the winner pool isn’t as rich. 

With last year’s winner Alex Borstein still very much a part of the conversation, are we going to see another repeat victory?

Who will win the Emmy for Supporting Actress in a Comedy?

When you consider all of the funny women working in television, you might think that the past winners in the Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series race would be competitive. However, with Julie Bowen, Allison Janney, and now Kate McKinnon monopolizing the 2010’s with two wins apiece, the other nominees don’t seem to stand a chance. (That’s not to say there aren’t shocking winners every once in a while – look no further than Merritt Wever’s win in 2013 for Nurse Jackie.) With McKinnon back in the race, can anyone overtake her?
