Cannes Winners: Triangle of Sadness, Park Chan-wook, and more...

by Nathaniel R

TRIANGLE OF SADNESS

The world's most famous film festival wrapped today in the South of France after 10 days of celebrity glamour, arthouse flexing, and critical divisions. As with last year a big thank you to our Italian friend and contributor Elisa Giudici for her on-the-ground coverage. She reviewed all of the films that were given prizes! The links for the new films go to Elisa's reviews. Links on older films will take you to past coverage from various writers.

Vincent Lindon's jury didn't seem to come to clear unanimous agreements since there were two different ties. Of the 21 competition features 10 won prizes...

The next Oscar Night will be March 12th, 2023

We finally have the dates for next Oscar season. Things aren't quite back to normal since we're still not back in early February (which the Academy had been working towards for years, finally getting there the year of Parasite) but at least it's a bit earlier than last season.

Governors Awards (Honorary Oscars) - Saturday, November 19th, 2022
Voting on Categories with Shortlists - December 12th through the 15th, 2022
Shortlists Announcements - Wednesday, December 21st, 2022
Nomination Voting - January 12th through the 17th, 2023
Nominations Announced - Tuesday January 24th, 2023
Nominee Luncheon - Monday, Febriuary 13th, 2023
Final Oscar Voting - March 2nd through the 7th, 2023
95th Annual Academy Awards - Sunday, March 12th, 2023

TRIVIA NOTE: This is the first time ever that Oscar night will be held on March 12th so those of you with March 12th birthdays finally have the ceremony on your birthday. (The dates when the most Oscars throughout history have been held is a tie between March 25th and March 29th each having had five ceremonies.)

We can finally set those countdown clocks. It's just 256 days until Nomination Morning and 303 days until Oscar night.

April Foolish Pt 7 - All Oscar Charts Are Complete!

by Nathaniel R

The annual 'April Foolish' Oscar speculation charts are up for the 95th Academy Awards. They'll be held next winter or spring in 2023 honoring the films of 2022. Normally by now we'd have a ceremony date but perhaps burnt by two years of COVID and media fallout from Oscar night, the Board of Governors is being coy about the dates for the new season.  Now about these predictions...

April Foolish Pt 6 - Guesswork on 'Best Actress'

by Nathaniel R

Florence Pugh in The Wonder © Netflix

The past two years of Best Actress races have been incredible rides when uncertainty reigned about who might win. That's highly unusual which is why we prefer speculating about nominations when truly everything is up in the air... at least until precursors start arriving but that's still 8 months away. On the April Foolish top 20 BEST ACTRESS CHART you'll find 9 previous winners including Cate Blanchett and Olivia Colman, 5 (mostly) younger nominees still building momentum towards their first win including Florence Pugh and Margot Robbie, and 6 women who've never landed a nomination though one of them (Michelle Yeoh) already should have.

OKAY DRUMROLL PLEASE... AND THE PREDICTIVE 5 ARE...

Tomorrow we'll conclude the first wave of prediction charts with Best Picture and Best Director...

April Foolish Pt 5 - Who will be our new 'Best Actor'?

by Nathaniel R

Hmmmm. Could Hugh Jackman pick up another Tony and the Oscar in the next 10 months?

Which actor will pull an Andrew Garfield this year and get the internet excited about his work with renewed passion? Which actor will pull a Benedict Cumberbatch and become the year's critical darling only to lose the statue? Which actor will pull a Will Smith and be the slam dunk winner due to a well liked performance and his entire career beforehand? We can't possibly know yet but we can speculate about it. So let's do that.

Internet Passions? My crystal ball says either Austin Butler (Elvis), Colin Farrell (Banshees of Inisherin), or Brendan Fraser (The Whale)

Critical Darling? Hmmm. Adam Driver (White Noise), Viggo Mortensen (Crimes of the Future), or Colman Domingo (Rustin)

"It's Time" Career Win Possibilities? Hugh Jackman (The Son), Colin Farrell or Brendan Gleeson (Banshees of Inisherin), Adam Driver (White Noise)
