Tribeca 2019: "White as Snow"

Jason Adams reporting from the Tribeca Film Festival one last time...

The sins of the flesh have always been right there on the surface of Fairy Tales, waiting to be ravaged by sex and by violence, by finger and by claw. Crooked old ladies morph into comely lasses, and ripe red lips are ready to be plucked and plundered. Snow White didn't move in with seven little dudes by mistake -- whatever our imaginations can imagine, whatever wishes our hearts can make, they're all within reach for a price, endless sleep and poisoned apples. Anne Fontaine's White as Snow is just the latest in a long string of movies soft-coring up our princess fantasies...

I'm wishing... (I'm wishing)... 🎶

Someday our funds will come...Hello dear readers!

Today is your host's birthday (c'est moi, Nathaniel R) and I want to thank my team for filling in for me while I was on a wee vacation --special thanks to Chris Feil who has been a superstar since joining the team and really jumped in daily in my absence. In case you don't follow me on twitter or instagram, I was away at Disney World, a birthday treat from my bestie.

I'm not quite back up to speed from the trip so I shall return in the morning with a jampacked Wednesday through Friday of blogging for y'all since I know you haven't heard from me in a bit. I'll answer reader questions, return to Pfandom retrospective, oh and also BEST SHOT - PARENT TRAP (tomorrow night - pushed back 24 hours so you still have time to join us!), and more.

Since it's my birthday, I'm allowed to do a wee bit of fundraising. I did some wishing at Snow White's well while I was away and if she can survive a coma, get a Prince Charming, and a whole kingdom, and a whole new set of miniature friends, surely The Film Experience can continue strong another year with your support!

Becoming a patron saint of the site by setting up a monthly donation!
Whether you love the Oscar coverage, actress-obsessing, theme weeks, retrospectives, random silliness, or any of our goodies show your love. There are two ways to donate, subscription (which is wonderful as its steady and something we can count on) or a one time donation. A huge sloppy wet kiss and thank you to the few handfuls of you who have already done this. $2.50 a month from multiple people really helps more than you'd think.

For those who can't commit to a dime a day, consider a one time donation...

Fairy Tales, Witches, and Oscars. An 87 Year History

Over on Twitter Alex posed an interesting question to me and I thought I'd share it with you. Is Meryl Streep the first actor to be Oscar-nominated for playing a witch, or anyone in a fairy tale for that matter? As far as I can tell the answer is "in the way that you mean, yes" and "I believe so."

Though no witches in the fairy tale or broom-riding sense have been nominated before Streep, technically a witch star turn has won an Oscar and another spell-caster has been nominated. The first would be Ruth Gordon's diabolical coven leaderbusybody in Rosemary's Baby which we discussed in worshipful detail here.  And Sir Ian McKellen was nominated for playing "Gandalf the Grey" who, being a sorcerer, is basically the male equivalent of a witch. Otherwise, no witches. The famous witches we think of when we think of the movies weren't actually nominated. No, not even the greatest of them all, Margaret Hamilton in The Wizard of Oz (1939).

After the jump let's look back through cinema history and see how fairytale or witchy films like Into the Woods have fared at the Oscars shall we?  (This is an incomplete history. Feel free to share things I missed. Especially great witchiness.)

A History of... Rob Lowe

Today is Rob Lowe's 50th Birthday. This photo was taken only a couple of years ago for Vanity Fair...

To unearth the mystery (or at least to celebrate) Rob Lowe's continual beauty, undefiled by age, fickle series-jumping, or scandals. A completely true embellished history...

1964 Born in Charlottesville Virginia to a schoolteacher and a lawyer

1965 Infected by a infant virus, Rob Lowe goes deaf in one ear. To date it remains his only known physical flaw. MORE...
