I found myself seething with jealousy yesterday when Joey from Awards Daily received a Nomi Malone pin (left) in celebration of the release of the documentary You Don't Nomi (now available on iTunes, Amazon, and Google Play and we'll have an interview about that movie soon.)

Today on the inimitable Gina Gershon's birthday,  I am more zen about the injustices of being denied Showgirls swag. Life is not fair. And I'm getting too old for that whorey look, anyway.

Nevertheless I was one of the original champions* of the movie's trash brilliance, and I am programmed to celebrate it every time it comes back around to public attention. After the jump some tees, crafts, and artwork honoring the iconic characters from that classic film...

Curio: Portrait of a Lady on Fire

Up until about last month we had an incredibly sound theory that had NEON released Celine Sciamma's Portrait of a Lady on Fire (2019) as originally expected in the fall of last year OR pushed it back fully to its rescheduled February release without that pesky "one week qualifier" that the film would have been a solid Oscar success. In either scenario we believe it could have scored Best Director and Best Cinematography and maybe even Best Actress nominations. 

As it was, positioned haphazardly between film years whilst NEON was (justifiably) distracted with making the miracle of Parasite's Oscar success possible, Portrait had to settled for halfsies...

Curio: To Domhnall on his 37th Birthday

This week's episode of Curio is inspired by a recent screening of the first four episodes of HBO's Run. The series is so unusual in its pacing, withholding, character work, and sense of untethered possibility that it's difficult to say what it might amount to once the season (or series) is a wrap. On a scene by scene basis, though, it's a thrill. That's due at least in immeasurable part, to the chemistry between series stars Merrit Wever and Domhnall Gleeson. Neither of them are generally tasked with selling this kind of romantic comedy / sexy yearning and the series is all the better for that. So fresh!

With today being Domnhall Gleeson's birthday, let's look at how arts and crafts people capture his ginger gorgeousity...

Curio: The Adventures of Indiana Jones

Illustration by J Scott CampbellSince we're celebrating the 1981 Oscars this coming weekend with the season premiere of Supporting Actress Smackdown it's appropriate to look at the movie from '81 that's inspired the most fan art over the years: Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Steven Spielberg's best film (what? Fight me) introduced one of cinema's greatest heroes, the stuffy professor / snake-phobic but otherwise fearless adventurer Indiana Jones. Jones has gone on to multiple sequels and will surely be rebooted at some point (sigh) with a lesser being than Harrison Ford in the leading role.
