Hit Me With Your Best Shot: WEST SIDE STORY (2021)

by Cláudio Alves

A beautiful shot, full of carnality and color!

Re-watching Spielberg's interpretation of the classic musical made me realize that, beyond the mournful tonalities of Rita Moreno's Valentina, the new West Side Story works mainly as a tragedy of two gang leaders, what they symbolize, and the clashing communities they represent. So, logically, my best shot would have to feature Riff and Bernardo while also showcasing the best aspects of the picture's photographic strategy. Hopefully, it'd also hide some of my personal misgivings with it, too – namely, the overabundance of glaring lens flares...

The Tony Awards return to tradition. Here's what's eligible...

by Nathaniel R

Shery Lee Ralph, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Beanie Feldstein at least season's Tony Awards

The past two years have thrown awards shows (not to mention the whole entertainment industry) for quite a loop.  Nowhere was that more true than the Tony Awards with Broadway entirely shut down and most of the presumed contenders never opening in 2020. The Tony Awards for 2019 and 2020 shows were finally held last September, just under a year after nominations were announced!!! With Broadway theaters reopened for some time now (proof of vaccination and masks still required) the American Theater Wing is resuming the Tony Awards as we know them, returning to their usual month (June!) and their usual venue (Radio City Music Hall) so we're getting the 75th Tony Awards just nine months after the 74th.

The Tony Awards will arrive on June 12th and the four hour show will air live, for the first hour on Paramount+ and the final three hours on CBS. from 7-11 PM EST.  Productions have to open by April 28th to be eligible and the nomimations will be announced on May 3rd, 2022. A list of eligible productions is after the jump...

Almost There: Mike Faist in "West Side Story"

by Cláudio Alves

While the role has been shortened compared to the 1961 Best Picture winner, Mike Faist's Riff feels exponentially more complex than Russ Tamblin's take on the same character. So much so that he became one of the standouts of West Side Story '21 and won our Almost There poll, trumping the likes of Lady Gaga and Cate Blanchett. As it was the reader's choice, I'm obliged to explore the performance in an appropriate deep-dive. Though, truth be told, it's less obligation than plasure. Maybe the great surprise of the season, Mike Faist steals the musical remake from his co-stars, running away with the picture.

From innate charisma to a cornucopia of curious acting choices, Mike Faist's Riff is worthy of gold, regardless of the Academy's indifference…

ACE Eddie Awards split on musicals, embracing "tick tick... BOOM!" while shunning "West Side Story"

by Nathaniel R

a split decision on the big musicals of 2021

The American Cinema Editor's Guild is the second of four guilds to announce on this unofficial "Super Thursday" in which PGA, ACE, DGA, and WGA are all announcing... It's the last big precursor announcement before Oscar nominations on February 8th. The biggest surprise if that they've shunned the energetic precision of West Side Story in Best Editing but somehow Don't Look Up (with considerable pacing / rhythm problems) was honored. tick, tick... BOOM!'s nomination is interesting given the West Side Story cold shoulder. The list of nominees and a few more comments after the jump...

Interview: Lin-Manuel Miranda on "Encanto" and "tick, tick...BOOM!"

by Nathaniel R

at the world premiere of "tick, tick, BOOM!"

I had the pleasure of interviewing Lin-Manuel Miranda in November while he was doing press for Encanto, now streaming on Disney+ with its soundtrack doing great business, too. He was energetic and smiling and gave great quote. Just a few days later, in a significantly less arranged moment, we came face-to-face the night of tick, tick... BOOM!'s premiere in Los Angeles. The response to the movie that night couldn't have been dreamier. He looked elated if significantly more tired than he had over Zoom. He admitted at the party that the entire week was a total blur. Just the week? The entire past year has been one Lin-Manuel Miranda highlight after another. So much so that we named him one of our top three entertainers of the year. In addition to questions about Encanto, tick, tick...BOOM!, and Hamilton, I made sure to ask him how he finds time for sleep.
